Brief 2 - CoP - Publication: Primary Research

Airborne Propaganda

I was very lucky and managed to get hold of one of the Airborne propaganda leaflets Hitler dropped down over England. I found the layout and font quite interesting and it really put into context how the propaganda worked and how real it was.

Ration Book

In the way of binding, page layout, font size and choice I was really unsure on how to put this together. I found a replica online which has been very useful in all these categories. One thing I noticed was how the font wasn't a clear print it parts of the letter hadn't printed properly and looked almost scratched off. This makes me think that screen printing could be appropriate as if less ink is pushed through the screen then parts of the letters won't print properly leaving this gap and looking like an un-perfect print.

Another thing that I've noticed is that the pages are different colours. Perhaps this is something I could look into for different sections or different types of propaganda. For example one section could be how the English promoted keeping mum or keeping your mouth shut as well as growing your own food; these two could be different colours to break it up.

One thing that surprised me about the book was the size and how few pages are in a book. Once I have gathered enough research I will look into doing a separate book for each country or even a separate book for each type of propaganda as previously mentioned.

Life Insurance

I also managed to get my hands on some old documents. This below was a life insurance document. The thing that attracted me to this was the typography in the title and how it feeds down into the body copy.

I really like the type writer type used on the document, and as much as I would love to use this in my ration book I don't think it is appropriate as they would have been mass produced not typed up one by one.

Passed Down Book

These are pictures of a book that has been passed down in my family. It keeps notes of everything from loans to the price of bacon and when people died. I really like the hand writing and how neat it is, it is definitely a lost art. The change in pen colour and tattered appearance really shows how used it was.

Holders Card

This was a holders card which everyone needed in the war, I quite like the idea of having something smaller to go along with the books.

Workers Policy
This was a policy from when my great grandad worked in a factory. It is from 1901 and has retained great condition. I like the font and the whole layout. I think it is quite amazing to look at how things were prior to war.
