Brief 4 - Message Delivery: Research into Newspapers

The aim of the brief is focused on research. A newspaper had to be purchased on the 22.10.13 and an article chosen from the paper. There was no suggestions or limits on what paper/s to buy or what stories to research. However it was strongly warned against doing a heavy or depressing subjects as a large body of research would have to be created around the subject and form a presentation.

Four newspapers were bought so that the chosen story could be compared in the way its presented and written. By buying four it also allows for there to be comparisons between the different papers and the markets they are aimed at. The four different papers that were bought are: The Sun, The Independent, The Times, The Daily Mirror.

All the papers have picked a different story to run with on the front page. Not even judging them by the stories they have chosen to run with you can tell what kind of paper is aimed at who by the ratio of images to text. For example The Times is majority text  with an article on Energy bills and also a photo of the naughtiest boy continued within the paper. On the other hand the Sun and Mirror focus on the shocking stories and use larger images and a single line caption to capture the attention of their audience. The Independent seems to be a middle ground between the two opposite ends. It isn't covered in a massive image but isn't a full page of text rather they have a large attention seeking statement with a list of bullet points supporting it.

Its quite interesting how the times has not chosen a grasping caption or shocking image to show on the front cover. This suggests they have a set audience who will buy from them anyway and perhaps don't mind reading the text to understand the article.
